THE CONCEPT EV LINEUP OF VW GUARANTEES BUZZ

The latest electric vehicle concept line unveiled by Volkswagen looks backwards and forwards at the same time. An updated version of the iconic microbus, the ID. Buzz is a futuristic version of the iconic vehicle. It’s what George Jetson would drive if he were a flower-wearing, palm tree-loving surfer from SoCal. Also included in the ID. line is the ID. ID, Crozz, Vizzion, and ID. They all feature sleek, sculpted lines as well as options for autonomous driving and augmented reality. One of the biggest buzzes of this VW concept is that the electric buzz is guaranteed-the German automaker will guarantee 70 percent battery life for eight years or 100,000 miles.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding EV car battery warranties. With a 70 percent capacity guarantee, a car battery that provides less than 70 percent of the original range will be replaced. As batteries degrade faster, the battery of the Smart EQ with an estimated range of 99 miles per charge will degrade much more quickly than a Tesla S 100D with an estimated range of 393 miles. Both BMW and Nissan guarantee seventy percent of capacity. In contrast, the Tesla Model S, which requires even less recharging and has an unlimited range, does not provide a percentage guarantee, but instead covers 60 percent of the battery capacity. Volkswagen’s concept ID is covered by a warranty. Due to the expected range of around 300-400 miles, drivers will spend more time on the road than at the charging station, as this lineup is at the top of the standard for EV automakers’ battery warranties.

VW sold its first bus in the U.S. in 1950 with 30 horsepower! ID Buzz is a boxy vehicle with rounded corners, windows all around and near-zero body overhang, but most comparisons end there-the electric powertrain will produce 369 horsepower and the hexagonal headlights communicate the vehicle’s status. As a 2020 model, it will begin production in 2019 after being revealed at the Detroit Auto Show.

There is another car in the ID. line that includes the ID. Featuring an augmented reality heads-up display and an infotainment tablet, Crozz is a bossy Sportster expected to reach speeds of over 110 mph. Featuring a retractable steering wheel for full-autonomous driving when possible, the ID. is a four-door (two are sliders) with an all-new cockpit experience. It is VW’s first fully-autonomous vehicle, so it does not require a steering wheel or pedals. You won’t just be driven. In the future, cars will recognize occupants and adapt their seats, climate control, and music playlists according to their needs.

VW is developing DC Fast Charging, so cars can reach 80 percent battery capacity in just 30 minutes, dramatically reducing charge time, one of the biggest hurdles for EV car customers.
