Easy tips to keep your log cabin clean

When properly maintained and cared for, log cabins have the potential to last a lifetime which is why looking after them is so important. Whether you own one already or are looking at log cabins for sale and wondering about how much upkeep they entail, here are some helpful tip, tricks and advice on how to clean and maintain your log cabin so that it is sparkling year-round.

Exterior walls

Generally speaking, it is advisable to clean the outside walls at least once a year in order to remove any grime, dust, cobwebs, dirt or algae with either a hose at low pressure or by hand. Use a soft bristle brush and a non-toxic exterior cleaning product to scrub the surface and rinse thoroughly, leaving it to dry naturally in the sun. Avoid using a pressure washer at all costs as this can damage the surface.

Roof

It is much easier to keep on top of cleaning your roof than to leave it too long and have to wade through years of build-up. You will need a ladder, hose, long mop, broom, soft cloths and a suitable exterior shampoo or cleaning product. First, gently remove sticks, leaves, dirt and debris with the broom and then pour over buckets of soapy water, covering the surface. Use the brushes and mop to scrub and wipe away filth and grime, pushing the dirty water into the gutters. Put the hose on a low pressure setting and use to wash away the remaining suds and leftover dirt.

Guttering

Inspect gutters regularly to see if there are any;

  • Visible cracks which mean the section that is damaged and will need fixing or replacing
  • Signs of leakage and if so, find the source and resolve the issue
  • Overflowing leaves and debris which will need to be properly cleared out using a bucket, ladder and gloves
  • Loose fittings which need tightening

Once clear of leaves and debris, gutters can easily be cleaned either by hand or using a helpful gutter washing tool that attaches to the end of your garden hose and allows you to clean them whilst remaining safely on the ground.

Windows and doors

Cleaning the glass regularly with a window spray or white vinegar both inside and out using a micro-fibre cloth. One great tip is to use a car windscreen cleaner on the exterior glass, as this helps to make it water repellent. Check around the windows and doors to make sure they are properly sealed and all caulking is still in place as if not, this may need redoing.

Flooring

Keeping on top of hoovering is standard but in order to keep floors in top condition, be sure to deal with any marks or stains quickly before they take hold. Carpet cleaning machines can be rented fairly cheaply, or you can hire a company to come and rejuvenate your carpets with a good deep clean. Hard floorings such as lino can be easily hoovered and cleaned with a mop. One additional tip is to use an eraser on any heel marks that have occurred as this can work great to remove them.

Upholstery

Hoover your sofas and upholstery frequently to remove the build-up of dust and dirt. Check labels and use suitable products such as foams, sprays and washes to keep them clean, fresh and stain free.
